With having undergone a large amount of suburban growth over the past 50 years, Calgary and cities around the world need to start thinking about how suburbia can be retrofitted. In Calgary many communities may stay residential for decades to come because of either choice or inability to retrofit with any other use (such as retail) because of road way and community design. There are however many parts of Calgary that will by necessity need to be retrofitted to remain economically viable.
In the following TED talk Ellen Dunham-Jones, a proffeser architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, looks at ways in which suburbs have and can be retrofitted. Enjoy!
