Calgary will have to reconsider its construction schedules and financing options for LRT expansion, recreation centres and other projects as it braces for a $100-million cut in its “sustainability” grant from the deficit-plagued Stelmach government.

Civic leaders around Alberta have been warned that next month’s provincial budget — which was to include the first full-sized instalment of Premier Ed Stelmach’s promised $1.4-billion Municipal Sustainability Initiative — will only include grants roughly the size of 2009’s more modest offerings.
