I'm highly skeptical of many of these urban agriculture ideas, especially when they're portrayed in such a 1984-style monolithic building. Where are you going to find the water for these things? It's not like it falls out of the... oh. Never mind.

It looks like this article was written before the economic down turn. Its seems like every time this city is in the middle of a boom, all of these good ideas are presented and then the economy tanks and they are shelved. Already part of the Bow development has been put on hold and many interesting condo developments that would revitalize hurting parts of the downtown area have been cancelled or scaled back (ex. Arriva). Hopefully the trend does not continue this time seeing as vacancy rates for office and residential buildings are going up. This city seemed like it was finally moving in the right direction!

Calgary will be a facinating blend (I suspect) of pragmatism-meets-cosmopolitanism in the coming years, that's for sure.

Some sharp-tongued invective from Alderman McIver, indeed. Interesting to note that he doesn't think that last-minute, closed-door meetings with real estate developers are a breach of democratic process, but instead a "fact of life" (which would make sense, as real estate developers constitute the largest sources of funding for the majority of Aldermanic campaigns). Personally I would like to see McIver publicly defend his record on council against Nenshi, as he seems so eager to do - perhaps in a moderated debate, where blunted ad hominems tend to lose much of their effectiveness.
